    Jargon & Glossary

    There are many terms and expressions used in schools that can be hard to understand, here are a few definitions to help you out!

    Academy

    An independent state funded school.  An academy has more freedom over finance, curriculum and teachers pay and conditions.

    D&T

    Design and Technology

    DfE

    Department of Education

    EAL

    English as an additional language

    EHCP

    Education, Health and Care plan – previously referred to as a statement (although there is a difference).  This is a legally binding document that prescribes clearly the nature of a child’s learning difficulties and the objectives that need to be met in order to ensure that the child concerned makes strong progress.

    EWO

    Educational Welfare Officer

    EYFS

    Early Years Foundation Stage  - the framework of study for 0 -5 year olds (it covers our Reception classes)

    FSM

    Free School Meals

    HLTA

    Higher Level Teaching Assistant

    INSET

    In-service Education and Training

    KS1

    Key Stage 1 – Years 1 and 2

    KS2

    Key Stage 2 – Years 3, 4, 5 and 6

    LA

    Local authority

    Looked after child

    A child who is not living with either parent and is in the care of the local authority

    MFL

    Modern foreign language

    Ofsted

    Office for standards in Education and Children’s services

    PE

    Physical Education

    PPA

    Planning, preparation and assessment time – at Allington this is one full day per fortnight for all full time teachers

    PTFA

    Parent, teachers and friends association

    QTS

    Qualified teacher status

    RE

    Religious Education

    SATs

    Standard Assessment Tests  - taken at the end of KS1 and KS2

    SEF

    School evaluation form.

    SEN

    Special Education Needs

    SENCo

    Special Education Needs co-ordinator

    SLT

    Senior Leadership Team

    SMSC

    Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development
